The U.S. Pretrial Services system plays an integral role as part of the Federal Judiciary. Our primary mission is to investigate the defendant’s background and, when ordered by the court, supervise defendants in the community.

In 1982, after much success in fulfilling its mission, Pretrial Services was officially recognized nationwide as an important entity within the Federal Judiciary.  In 1988, our office separated from Probation to form its own, independent agency.

Our district is the largest populated federal judicial district in the nation and consists of the following counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.

There are currently 34 U.S. District Court Judges and 20 Magistrate Judges serving our district. The Pretrial Services Office has 60 total staff - 39 of whom are supervisory and line officers, and the other 21 of whom are administration and support personnel.

Our headquarters office is located in the U.S. Courthouse in Los Angeles.  Our Investigation Unit is located in Los Angeles in the Roybal Federal Building.  We have branch offices located in Santa Ana  and Riverside.

In the 94 federal judicial districts nationwide, U.S. Pretrial Services Officers play an important and vital role in the administration of justice.  As an important part of their diverse mission, our officers balance the defendant’s right to supervised release with the court’s concern that the defendant will appear at subsequent hearings as required and that he/she will not endanger the public.

U.S. Pretrial Services Officers provide these services, which entail the core responsibilities of background investigation, report preparation, community-based supervision, and referral for counseling, treatment, education and employment services, to name a few.

Our officers investigate defendants for the court by gathering and verifying various types of important information about them. The resulting Pretrial Services Report assists the court in determining whether or not the defendant should be released under supervision pending the outcome of his/her criminal case.

In an effort to decrease unnecessary federal detention, Congress laid the foundation for the U.S. Pretrial Services system. The Pretrial  Services Act of 1982,  in conjunction with the Bail Reform Act, authorized implementation of Pretrial Services nationwide. The U.S. Pretrial Services Office in the Central District of California was first established as a pilot project in 1975 within the U.S. Probation Office in Los Angeles.
